THEOLOGY IN THE MEDIA. Theology is everywhere. The word “theology” literally means “knowledge of God”. Your theology is what you know, or think you know, about God.

It is interesting that, while activists and politicians, including judges, are trying to strip our society of Christianity, you hear references to God more than ever in popular discourse. That does not mean the people speaking are Christians, but it does mean they see God as active in their world.

A recent example is Shar Jackson. She is an actress who was married to Kevin Federline. Federline divorced Jackson, by whom he had two kids, and took up with Britney Spears. He married BS and she is reportedly pregnant now. No, this post is not about being fruitful and multiplying.

MTV News interviewed Jackson recently. Reflecting upon the divorce, Jackson gave a theological perspective to the whole situation. She said "It's cool," she said. "Obviously, God didn't think that's who should be in my life at this particular moment in time and that's all right."

Jackson’s statement reveals something about her theology: she believes God has control over who her husband is and whether he stays or goes.

Jackson, at least in this instance, espouses a belief in determinism. That is, she believes that God wanted her husband to leave her and made it happen. Many people do not believe God causes bad things to happen, only good things. Normally, the Calvinist is the only one brave enough to say God sends the bad stuff as well as the good stuff. It is interesting to hear it from someone in Hollywood.
