Because he told us everything they needed to know through his ultimate prophet, Jesus Christ, as recorded by his apostles. Jude 3 says "I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints." Revelation 22:18 says "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book."

Your post made me remember something I read a week or so ago in daily Bible reading. Deuteronomy 13 says that sometimes a false prophet's prediction will come true and, yet, that does not determine if their message is true or not. What determines if their message is true is whether it prompts one to follow the Lord. And now, since God's Word to us is complete, I think we can judge a prophet's message based on its compliance with that Word.
