J.W. Hendryx INTERVIEW WITH Dr. STEVEN J. LAWSON
I found this inteview interesting, partly because I'm reading Lawson's book.
You can read the whole interview here.
Here is the money quote:
Q. As you have traveled to many different countries, do you see, by and large, a embracing of the doctrines of grace in other parts of the world? Do you think America is the most resistant to the doctrines of grace? Why or why not?
A. As I travel to many different parts of the world, I, unfortunately, see an Arminian base where I go. Tragically, the church in America , I have found, is the most resistant to the doctrines of grace. I think that this is caused by a culture and church that is saturated with political correctness, individual autonomy, and financial prosperity, as well as spiritual apathy and theological superficiality. All these elements have a deadening effect upon understanding the truth and feed Arminianism, in one way or another. Sad to say, the church is just as man-centered in other parts of the globe as it is here. We, who believe in the sovereignty of God in salvation, remain islands of reformed thinking in the midst of oceans of semi-Pelagian doctrine.
ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS
Last Tuesday, as President Bush got off the helicopter in front of the White House, he was carrying a baby piglet under each arm.
The squared away Marine guard snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "Nice pigs, sir."
The President replied "Marine, these are not just pigs. These are authentic Arkansas Razorbacks. I got one for Senator Hillary Clinton and I got one for Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi."
The squared away Marine again snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "Excellent trade, sir."

Fifty people were killed this week end when fighting erupted between armed deacons from St. Luke’s Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church during a sunrise service. Witnesses say the Methodists charged the Presbyterians during the closing prayer and opened fire, killing dozens. The Presbyterians took positions behind the Lord’s Supper table and returned fire, killing many of the attackers.
This was the latest in a series of skirmishes between members of the two churches. Experts at local news outlets predict that continued fighting will destabilize the city. Callers from downtown said they could hear the rattle of automatic weapon fire, with the occasional explosion. In addition to the deaths, many were injured in the cross fire and the ensuing panic, as women and children ran from the scene.
No, not really.
I just thought it would provide some context.
But, in Iraq, stability is threatened by continued fighting between two Shiite militias, one supporting Muqtada al-Sadr and the Badr Brigade. Think of it as Sadr vs. Badr. This is not Arab vs. Foreigner, Muslim vs. Infidel (that would be you), or even Sunni vs. Shiite. No, it is now Shiite vs. Shiite, willing to kill each other during a religious festival they both celebrate.

A WING AND A PRAYER
Reuters news service reports that the Vatican now has its own airline. Its purpose is to fly Catholics on pilgrimages. (Pause here for Flying Nun jokes.)
The planes have Vatican logos. I didn’t know the Vatican had a logo. Everyone else does, though, so you need one to be successful in the world. I looked it up and it is above.
Vatican Air also has a slogan: "I'm Searching for Your Face, Lord". I guess they didn’t hear about all those appearances of the Lord on office building windows and cheese sandwiches.
You know, that might be a great marketing tool, though. Instead of being a tornado chaser, you could be a vision chaser. You could fly around on Vatican Air to all the latest sightings of Jesus or Mary on various objects around the globe.
I also thought it was interesting that one of the destinations was Mount Sinai, since there is great debate about where it is. I wonder if they picked one, or if they just fly over the Middle East and say it’s down there somewhere.
I guess the in-flight movie is an episode of Mother Angelica Live.
The Pope’s competitors in the airline business appear ready to compete. Ryanair is one of them, and it claims it “already performs miracles that even the Pope's boss can't rival, by delivering pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela for the heavenly price of 10 euros,"
Since there will evidently be competition, I thought I would offer a few suggestions to the Vatican.
1. Instead of a points program, you could have dispensations. For example, for a round trip ticket from Rome to Lourdes, you receive five years off your purgatory stay, ten if you pay cash.
2. You could offer bodily assumption into heaven in the event of a crash.
3. Sally Field could be the t.v. spokesperson, wearing her old Flying Nun costume.
4. You could advertise: “Now, your earthly journeys can be spiritual journeys.”
5. The flight attendants could say “In the event we lose air pressure in the cabin, an oxygen mask will drop from the overhead and the Lord’s Prayer will be played over the intercom.”
6. You could curtain off an area in the back for Protestants, and call it the Separated Brethren Cabin. No dispensations would be offered to this group, of course.
Then, of course, my mind went to “what if Southern Baptists got their own airline”? (No, it doesn’t count that they chartered a private plane and went to see Chronicles of Narnia in England.) I think it could be a division of Lifeway called either Kingdom Air or Purpose Driven Air.
All pilots and flight attendants would have to sign the Baptist Faith and Message for whatever year it was last amended.
All pilots and flight attendants would have to prove they were baptized by immersion in a Southern Baptist Church.
The schedules would have to use a different word for “destination”, because it sounds too Calvinistic.
At the top of the flight schedule, it would say “God has a wonderful flight plan for your life”.
They could serve Testamints from Lifeway.
The inflight movie would be the Purpose Driven Life dvd.
If you missed your flight, you would have to go to the “Left Behind” booth.

1 Samuel 3
The Lord Calls Samuel
3:1 Setting The Stage
Now the young man Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.
The writer has told us that Eli and his line will be replaced. He now moves to tell us of the calling of Samuel into the service of the Lord. To set the stage, he reminds us that Samuel is ministering to the Lord under the supervision of Eli. The people were not hearing from the Lord on a regular basis. It was rare that the Lord revealed his word to the people or that he gave someone a vision. We see throughout the Bible that the Lord often conveys a message by giving a vision. Proverbs 29:18 says “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.” We certainly have seen that in Israel’s history. (This verse is often cited as a kind of management tool, meaning that you have to have plans to succeed. But, it is speaking of a vision from God, a message from God.) In Hosea 12:10, the Lord said “I spoke to the prophets; it was I who multiplied visions, and through the prophets gave parables.”
The Lord described this process in Exodus 12:6-8. He said “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.”
The fact that the word of the Lord was rare probably means Israel was under God’s wrath. It is a matter of judgment that he did not give his word. His word is a blessing to his people, then and now. If he did not speak, they suffer. In Amos 8:11-12, the Lord declared a judgment on Israel when he said:
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
12 They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
but they shall not find it.
Similarly, Psalm 74 laments the judgment of God, and in 74:9, says: “We do not see our signs; there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long.”
We know that the priesthood was corrupted by Eli’s sons, and now we know that the Lord was not speaking to them frequently, so the stage is set for the Lord to act, calling someone to whom he can reveal his word and who will speak it to the people.
We are blessed in this time to have the Bible and to hear it preached and taught. But, many churches do not preach and teach it, and other activities take its place. We are blessed when we are in a place where the Lord speaks through the preaching and teaching of the scripture on a regular and continual basis.
3:2-5 The First Call
2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.
4 Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” 5 and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.
The first call came at night. Eli was lying down in his place, wherever that was. He had become old and nearly blind. However, even though God’s man had lost the ability to see the light, the light was still burning, the lamp of God had not yet gone out. Exodus 27:21 tells us the priest is to keep the lamp burning all night, until morning. Samuel was actually sleeping in the tabernacle, here called the temple. The ark was in the temple. The ark is where the presence of the Lord was. So, the Lord called this little boy. He thought it was Eli, and obediently went to Eli to see what he wanted. But, of course, Eli had not called, and he sent him back to bed.
3:6-7 The Second Call
6 And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
Again the Lord called Samuel, and again he thought it was Eli. The writer explains to us that Samuel did not know the Lord, so he did not recognize his voice. He had not yet received a revelation of the Lord’s word as a prophet, so he did not know what was going on.
3:8-9 The Third Call
8 And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the young man. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
When the Lord called the third time, and Samuel went to Eli, Eli finally perceived it was the Lord calling. Normally, the Lord would have spoke to Eli. Eli was the priest and the judge. But, Eli had already been told his line was ended in God’s service. His sons would in fact be killed. He realized the Lord was calling his replacement. So, he told Samuel to respond to the Lord next time he heard the voice.
3:10-14 The Fourth Call
10 And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, [1] and he did not restrain them. 14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”
After Eli’s instruction to Samuel, the Lord again called. This time the writer tells us that he actually came and stood when he called. This would make us think it is an appearance of Christ. Samuel responded as Eli instructed: “speak for your servant hears”. And the Lord did speak, and the message was bitter.
At this point, it would seem that Samuel’s prophetic ministry has been inaugurated. He has received a word directly from the Lord, and even experienced the presence of the Lord.
The message of the Lord is the destiny of Eli’s family. The “man of God” has previously delivered much of this message. It is now confirmed to Samuel, with a little added. The Lord confirmed the message of the man of God, that he will do all he said. Then he added an even more chilling message. He will punish the house of Eli forever because of their blasphemy. Further, the Lord swears that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.
Not only will Eli’s house be cut off from the priesthood, and not only will his sons be killed, but their sins will not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering. If their sins are not atoned for, they are not forgiven. If their sin is not forgiven, they will die in their sins, and they will not go to heaven. Their blasphemy has resulted in their damnation.
God takes his name and his reputation seriously, and so should we.
Even though the message here is one of judgment, we should not miss the demonstration of the Lord’s kindness. He called this young boy, and boy did not understand it. Yet, the Lord is patient and calls repeatedly. He is not in a hurry and he does not berate Samuel for his lack of understanding. He gives him time to understand and respond. There is a sense of gentleness here in this calling, in dealing with one who will serve him, in contrast to his stern judgment for those who blasphemed him.
3:15-18 Samuel Relays the Message
15 Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.” 17 And Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.”
Can you imagine Samuel’s state of mind? He has been in the presence of the Lord as only a little boy. The Lord has spoken to him and delivered a terrible message. Eli is his surrogate parent and his leader. Yet, he is given the message of Eli’s destruction. So, he is afraid. But Eli demanded that he tell, and he does. That, by the way, is what a prophet does. He delivers the message of the Lord, whether it is pleasant or not.
For all his faults as a parent and priest, Eli accepted the word of the Lord and bowed to his sovereignty.
3:19-21 Samuel the Prophet
19 And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord. 21 And the Lord appeared again at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
Samuel continued to grow up. He was careful and did not ignore the word of the Lord. Even though he was a little boy, he was a prophet. Verse 20 tells us that all the people knew he had been established as a prophet. And the Lord continued to appear to him and to speak to him. You see here the things that made Samuel great and considered on the same level as Moses. He met with the Lord face to face and received his word directly. The passage we referred to previously, in Exodus 12, explained that God appeared to the prophet in visions. He went on, however, to elevate Moses above the ordinary prophet, because he spoke to Moses face to face. God said:
“Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the LORD.”
We see the same is true of Samuel.
It is with Samuel that the office of the prophet becomes the normal thing in Israel. There have been prophets before, but, beginning with Samuel, there will be a constant prophetic voice in Israel, relaying God’s message, his word, to his people.

Instapundit is reporting the rumor, too. Supposedly, South Florida law enforcement is on alert and they plan to hold the announcement until rush hour dies down, expecting a massive reaction.

CHILDREN ARE A GIFT FROM THE LORD
I fellow at work today told me about a friend of his daughter, whose parents were divorced. This teenager has not seen her father in 10 years. I read once that 90% of divorced fathers never see their children after the first 12 months from the divorce.
I cannot imagine how a father can walk away from his children this way. The Baby left for the next year of college yesterday. I feel like I have a hole in my heart. Summer is just long enough for me to get used to having this delightful child back in the house, then, poof, it is over.
My other two daughters are out of state, and I think of them constantly, saying little prayers for their physical and moral safety and their spiritual growth. I think often about them as little girls, laughing and playing, tying to get my jokes, laying their heads on my shoulder after a long day, all those great moments that make me laugh and tear up at the same time.
Gifts are to be enjoyed and cherished, not neglected.

Dr. Mohler has a good post on gay, Episcopalian Bishop Robinson. It turns out homosexuality is not his only problem, he speake of not believing in parts of the Nicene Creed. It shows how much trouble the ECUSA is in.

Tim Challies is having a read along on his blog. The book will be J. C. Ryle's Holiness, a classic. People will read along, he'll post and people can comment. Great idea. I encourage you to do it. I'm going to.

Here is a statement that should cause you concern:
"There's nothing you can do to a human being onscreen that is taboo anymore. Over and over again, people are breaking the boundaries of the body, hurting people, chopping people up, ravaging people. ... For things to be truly scary, we're going to have to find new boundaries to tread on." -- writer/producer Akiva Goldsman (The Da Vinci Code, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, A Beautiful Mind).
It is acceptable in Hollywood to push boundaries to sell tickets. Hollywood feels no responsibility to protect human dignity or societies values. In fact, I would say a value of Hollywood is to destroy traditional values and instill new ones. I guess that is actually the essence of being liberal. Although few in Hollywood would endorse a society where one chops people into pieces or tortures them, it is willing to plant that fantasy in your mind for the sake of making money.

YOU MIGHT BE A TEXAN IF...
If someone in a Lowe's store offers you assistance and they don't work
there, you may live in Texas.
If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Texas.
If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a
wrong number, you may live in Texas.
If "Vacation" means going anywhere south of Dallas for the weekend, you may
live in Texas.
If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Texas.
If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live
in Texas.
If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both
unlocked, you may live in Texas.
If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them,
you may live in Texas.
If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph -- you're going 80 and
everybody is passing you, you may live in Texas.
If you find 60 degrees "a little chilly", you may live in Texas.
If you actually understand these jokes, you definitely live in Texas.

Forget oil, a more immediate crisis is developing. There may soon be a worldwide shortage of champagne. Entreprenurial Frenchmen are hording tens of millions of bottles to make bigger bucks later. How American of them.
Demand for champagne is on the rise. I guess, as economies bubble up and tastes get more expensive, more people from more places want to pop the cork. Russia, China and India are emerging markets, and demand is increasing in the USA. Around 320 million bottles were sold last year worldwide, and 330 million are expected this year. That’s a lot of cork. Yields are apparently at maximum levels.
Although hording to manipulate the market is typically American, the governance of champagne making is typically French. The government decides how much land can be used to produce the bubbly. Presently, 32,600 hectares of vineyards are authorized to grow the grapes and it takes the government about 10 years to grant more land to it.
Man’s capacity for self indulgence is unlimited. Champagne was always the rich man’s drink. If the price goes up, it will only be more so. So, the richest will get it still. All the other rich drinkers will have to suffer the pains of deprivation.
Life is hard.
Rumors are circulating that French leaders accuse President Bush of plotting a secret invasion to take the Champagne forcibly from the France. The Surge in Iraq is just a cover to move troops closer to France. Looking back on Bush's trips to Europe the last year, critics shout "It's all about the champagne!" France has asked the U.N. Security Council to condemn a possible invasion in the strongest possible terms. England suggested a toast instead. U.N.leaders are scrambling to open liquor stores around the world and take payment in grape futures.
Hal Lindsey has issued his 21st revision of the book "Late Great Planet Earth", revising his claim that the world will end in Israel to claim that it will end in France as the forces of the world converge on France's wine growing area in a final confrontation over that most precious of liquids. He has now decided that Gog and Magog are rival vintners.
Jimmy Carter has shown up in Paris, giving an interview in front of the Eiffel Tower, saying "It is all the fault of America, which has consistently used its power and influence over the entire period of its existence, except during my presidency, to oppress the champagne market and its growers and the exceptionally kind and gentle people of France." He later got into a fist fight with Jessie Jackson and they both tried to get in front of a reporter's camera.
Hillary Clinton issued a press release stating that, if elected, she would seize all the stored bottles and all the profits and put them into a fund to study whether cow farts or Al Gore speeches created more methane. In addition, she promised that America would pay for free health care for any champagne growers in France.
Representative Murtha proposed an ear mark for the legislation needed to do the seizure, which legislation would fund and create the Murtha center for research and development of ear marks in his home development. Ann Coulter put out a cigarette in his ear, saying all democrats and frenchment were godless pagans who would be eaten alive by Arabs before they could sell their champagne, so it wouldn't matter anyway. Her new book will be out next week.
I'll keep you posted as this story develops.

BACK TO THE GRIND
We left Louisville and flew home Thursday night. It was good to see the Seminary Daughter and the Son-In-Law. They are doing well, I think. He is working and supporting them. How old fashioned, huh. She is keeping their home and going to school. They are still lovey dovey, which is good after almost a year. You can follow their exploits at their blog, The Lewisi. Links don't appear to be working on Blogger right now, or I would include the link.
We flew home after spending a lot of time being really warm in the airport and the plane. Louisville does not seem prepared for real heat. All of the restaurants and shops we went to were warm and the airport was really warm. Then, we sat on the plane with the air conditioning not working until getting in the air. Note to American Airlines: that is not fun. It got really hot sitting there, and it concerns the passengers when the pilot does not come on and say why we are not leaving, especially when the flight attendant is standing with her ear to the cockpit door.
Fortunately, the plane cooled off and DFW airport was nicely air conditioned. It was about 100 when we arrived, pretty normal for August in Fort Worth.
So, it was back to the grind, mowing the yard, trimming the bushes (whose idea was landscaping anyway?), cleaning house and running errands.
I always tell my kids "welcome to adulthood" when they complain about the responsibilities they now have.
I had to tell myself that several times yesteday and today.
Whose idea was adulthood anyway?

David Heddle at "He Lives" continues his posts on "The Drama of Redemption". You should read it. http://helives.blogspot.com/2007/08/drama-of-redemption-lesson-4-part-1.html#links.
Pardon the clumsey link, but I am on the Seminary Daughter's MacBook Pro and it doesn't show all the Blogger tools I am used to.

BOURNE REVISITED
We went to see the 3rd, and supposedly last, Bourne movie last night. Based on the character created by Robert Ludlum in his books, beginning with the Bourne Idenity, the movie was a classic, action packed thriller. If you read the books and worry about it changing your idea of the characters in the books, forget it. In fact, you will do better if you forget about the books and see the movie as a totally different story. The movies have consistently veered away from the story of the books and this one is no exception. The Bourne character is about the only thing that comes from the book. Hopefully, Ludlum's estate made some money on it and, thankfully, he was not around to get mad that they abandoned his story line.
The story line of the movie is actually rather old. There is a secret department of the government that went rogue and Bourne, as its victim, brings it down, with the help of insider Pamela Landy, who is the lone honest member of the government team. Despite the triteness of the plot, the movie really moves, the action scenes are good and Matt Damon does a pretty good job of playing the confused, but determined, Bourne. I would like to have seen a little more emotion from him, but Damon doesn't really do emotion.
Secrets do have a way of coming out. My mom used to say your sins would find you out. The Bible says what is whispered in the ear will be shouted on the roof tops. There is very little that we get away with, even when we take great pains to keep it quiet. That lesson comes through loudly in the movie.

HELLO FROM LOUISVILLE
I'm off on vacation, visiting the Seminary Daughter and the Son-In-Law. I figured to be off line the whole week, but found a wireless connection. The SD's MacBook Pro is really different than the Dell I am used to, but it is great at the wireless business.
Louisville is hot today, in the 90s and very humid. We walked a couple of blocks, only to find ourselves really hot and sweaty. So now we are cooling off in the a\c and watching videos.
I'm hoping to make a trip over to Southern Baptist Seminary and get a cap or something, since i am a fan of the seminary. Maybe I should get Dr. Mohler to autograph it, in the event he becomes the next SBC president.

My young friend, Josh Orr, is leaving for California to work with Invisible Children. This organization helps children in Uganda, a country ravaged by a sort of civil war\internal terrorism that preys on children. Josh will travel around the country, making video presentations in churches and schools to raise awareness and funds for the projects of I.C. Jesus told us to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, visit the sick and those in prison, and clothe the naked. This group is trying to do that in Uganda and Josh is part of it.
Way to go, Josh. I’m proud of you son.

If you missed any Sunday or any post, or want the complete set, email me at larry_thompson_ada@yahoo.com and I will email them to you. Of, if you are technology challenged, let me know and I will print them.
Godspeed. We are on to 1 Samuel.
