DAVID MARVELS AT GOD'S GRACE: 2 SAMUEL 7:18-29

David Marvels At God’s Grace

7:18-29

David realized that God chose him and blessed him as a matter of grace, not David’s works. So, he went to the tent where the Ark of the Covenant was and sat “before the Lord” to talk to him.

He first marveled at God’s treatment of him in the past.

David recognized that God brought him from the field to the throne God made David great, protecting him from Saul and from the Philistines. David went through a lot during the decade he waited to become king, but the Lord rescued him from all the dangers he faced.

David also marveled at the future God set before him: To have a dynasty which will rule Israel forever. David said “this is the instruction (literally, Torah) for mankind. (19) Decreed by God, it is the way it will be. (21) David’s descendant would be the means by which God fulfilled his promise to Abraham, that all nations would be blessed through him and his descendants.

David concluded his praise by declaring God to be great and unique. He said “there is no God besides you”. (22) This reflects the words of the first commandment: “You shall have o other gods before (or besides) me”. (Exodus 20:3)

He also extolled the uniqueness of Israel as the one nation God redeemed for himself and established to be his people forever. We in the new covenant hold on to the same promise. Jesus said:

”My sheep hear my voiced I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” (John 10:27-29)

David then prayed that God would confirm the word he spoke and to bless the house of David. We often pray the same way: we plead his promises. David prayed that God’s name would be magnified forever. (26) We pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:9-10)
