KOMPLIMENTING KERRY. Since I criticize him periodically, I think I need to compliment Mr. Kerry today. He is taking a week off of campaigning to honor President Reagan, who died this week. You could make cynical suggestions about ulterior motives, but I see it as a gesture of decency and respect, too often lacking in the political world.

I also saw one of the most poignant moments on the news tonight, as Mrs. Reagan lay her head on her husband's flag draped casket. The genuine affection these two had was always a marvel. Despite 10 years of disease, he remained the object of her affection. I can only imagine how empty her house must feel. Godspeed, Nancy.

Bravo, sir, on your evenhandedness with Mr. Kerry today.
